According to manufactures most vehicles will wear out the oil in a vehicle at a rate of 900 miles per quart on a full synthetic oil. Since most vehicles hold around 6 quarts we suggest changing the oil every 5000 miles
An oil change not only helps the engine last for many miles, it also gives a qualified mechanic the chance to look the vehicle over real good each time it comes in so any other maintenance items can be caught and discussed. There is a reason that it is worth doing the oil change at a qualified shop and not a quick lube.
One of the fastest ways for a technician to determine how well a car has been taken care of is how many leaks there are. Oil has a conditioner in it that seals up and conditions seals to help them stay pliable and last longer. If oil changes are done regularly oil leaks would be way less likely to occur.
Spark plugs have the equivalent electricity of a tesla coil sent through their electrodes approximately 300 million times over their lifetime. This makes for a pretty unhappy spark plug by the time they get to the mileage they are due at. It is safe to say that replacing the spark plugs when due is a worthwhile investment.
The #1 reason for a failed Catalytic Converter is Spark Plugs that where not done when they where supposed to be. A Catalytic Converter Replacement could be a very large investment compared to a tune up
Spark Plugs conduct electricity, but the coils are what actually create the electricity. The ignition coils create upwards of 30,000 volts to create the spark that goes through a spark plug. If the spark plug is wore out then the coil has to work extremely hard and can cause the ignition coil to overheat and melt costing 10 times more than just a spark plug
A serpentine belt does a lot of work on a vehicle these days. The air conditioner runs off the serpentine belt, the alternator runs off the serpentine belt, the water pump runs off the serpentine belt, the power steering runs off the serpentine belt, are you getting winded yet? Every one of these items that the belt runs are vital to the vehicle operation. If you loose power steering the steering wheel would take the Hulk to turn, if you loose the alternator you have about 10 minutes of driving before your vehicle shuts down and does some weird stuff, if you loose ac well that is self explanatory and if you loose the water pump catastrophic engine damage can occur in a matter of minutes.
The general rule of thumb for a serpentine belt replacement is 1 crack per linear inch. There are plenty of belt tools out there to check the depth, the angle of the grooves and a bunch of other stuff that would condemn a brand new belt. We would not recommend falling into that trap. Replace it when it is cracked and you will be just fine
The serpentine belt draws its power from the engine and transmits it to the accessory system. Because of the substantial power that it takes to do that ribs where added for more contact area and cooling. Your average belt can draw up to 10 horsepower from the engine to run everything at once, that is especially true if you have a mechanical fan on the water pump.
